Tool Chest
This mahogany tool chest nicely illustrates the beauty of Shaker furniture. All four corners of the box and all five drawers are hand dovetailed. The advantage to hand-cutting the dovetails as opposed to cutting them with a dovetail machine and router is the freedom the maker has to design dovetails and pins to the angles and sizes he is looking for. Hand-cut dovetails can often have small pins with very acute angles, unlike machine cut dovetails that generally look clunky and industrial.
For this piece I used ribbon mahogany for the primary wood and poplar for the secondary wood. The case has been fitted with a drop down lid and a small piano lock to secure the contents of the drawers.
