Jewelry Chest

Jewelry Chest

View detail

This Sheraton inspired, twelve-drawer jewelry chest was commissioned for a private residence. The drawers are veneered with a book-matched crotch mahogany. The drawers get slightly larger as they gracefully descend the façade. Each drawer’s hight is based on a function of the drawer just below it using the Fibonacci sequence. This method of arranging the hight of drawers has long been recognized as a visually pleasing way to resolve the issue of designing a stack of drawers ranging from very skinny at the top to very heavy at the bottom. This chest was built to house an extensive collection of jewelry. Each individual drawer is lined with suede and divided into dozens of customized compartments for specific pieces. The drawer dividers are finished slats of solid mahogany rounded on their tops and all joined together at each intersection. Each drawer is outfitted with a half mortise lock all keyed alike so that one key opens any of the twelve drawers. The front of all drawer dividers is finished off with an 1/8” bead milled into the solid wood and mitered into the side of the case. The piece is finished in a French polish with many coats of shellac buffed out to a very high shine.

The case stands 5’ tall, 2’wide and 18”deep.
