Dovetailed Bookcase

This dovetailed mahogany bookcase was constructed for a residence here in Maine. The client had chosen a place in her home where the bookcase was going to be placed and she had a basic idea about the design. When I first met with her she had some pictures she had gathered of styles she liked and I brought along some books and photographs of similar built-in cabinetry I had done in the past. The client mentioned to me that she had a small amount of beautiful wide mahogany lumber in the barn and asked me if we could use this in the project as opposed to spending additional money on lumber.
I brought the lumber back to the shop and drew up a design that allowed me to work within the materials and the dimensions we had. The final design was a dovetailed case eight feet long and three feet tall. The shelves are housed in sliding tenons and keyed dovetails. The wood is finished with Danish oil and wax.
